What the Printing Press Really Changed — and Who It Threatened First
We remember the printing press as an unambiguous gift. At the time it was a threat — to scribes, to the Church's monopoly on scripture, to everyone who controlled what could be known. Disruption is never neutral.

The myth of the unambiguous gift
I want to tell the version where the press arrives as a disruption rather than a blessing, because it explains far more — including the argument we are having right now about artificial intelligence. We remember technologies by their winners. The press gave us cheap Bibles, newspapers, the scientific paper, the novel — so we file it under “progress” and move on. But a technology does not arrive into a neutral world waiting to be improved. It arrives into an existing arrangement of who holds knowledge, who is paid to reproduce it, and who decides what may be copied at all. Change how knowledge is produced and you change all three, and the people at the top are not grateful — they are frightened, often rightly. What we call the printing revolution was, up close, a fight over power dressed up as a fight over progress.
The first people it threatened: the scribes
For centuries, a book was a thing a human being made by hand. In the monastic scriptorium and the university stationer’s workshop, trained copyists reproduced texts one letter at a time — slow, expensive, skilled work, and that skill was a livelihood. A scribe who had spent years perfecting a clean hand held something valuable precisely because it was scarce. The press destroyed that scarcity almost overnight. A print shop could produce in a day what a scribe produced in a year, and do it identically, again and again. The value of a beautiful hand did not slowly decline; it collapsed, and whole categories of craft that had supported families stopped being needed at the old scale.
The press did not ask the scribes whether they wanted to be disrupted. It never does. The machine arrives, the craft that sustained real people is hollowed out, and the story of “progress” gets written by whoever ends up on top.
There is a tidy myth that the scribes went quietly, that they were obsolete and deserved it. Some adapted — presses still needed proofreaders, editors, and skilled hands for luxury manuscripts. But many did not, because you cannot simply retrain a lifetime of embodied skill into relevance when the thing that made it valuable — its scarcity — has been abolished by a machine. This is the same wound later felt by the handloom weavers and croppers we now remember as the Luddites: skilled workers made worthless not by their own failure but by a device that could imitate the cheap part of what they did. The press just got there first among machines that copy words.
The second thing it threatened: the monopoly on scripture
The deeper threat was not economic but institutional. In late medieval Europe, the Church held something more powerful than land or coin: a monopoly on the interpretation of scripture. Bibles were in Latin, rare and expensive, mediated by clergy who told the faithful what the text said and meant. To control the copy was to control the reading, and to control the reading was to control belief. Cheap printing broke that chain at its weakest link — the copy. Once a text could be reproduced by the thousand, and once reformers began translating scripture into the languages people actually spoke, the layperson could, in principle, read the sacred text without a priest standing between them and the page. That is a redistribution of authority, and everyone involved understood it as one.
When Martin Luther’s challenge to the Church caught fire in the early sixteenth century, the press was the accelerant. His theses and pamphlets — printed cheaply, in German, in enormous numbers — spread faster than any authority could suppress them. Historians are careful here, and so am I: the press did not cause the Reformation, and the grievances that fed it were old. But it is hard to imagine that movement spreading as far and as fast without cheap print. The third thing it threatened: control over what could be known
Beyond the Church, every authority that governed by controlling information felt the ground shift. Kings, magistrates, and guilds had relied on the fact that most people could not easily learn what those in power wished to hide. Print made knowledge portable, cheap, and hard to recall: once a thing was printed in quantity and dispersed, you could not gather every copy back.
This is the real engine of the whole story. The press’s power was that it broke a monopoly on copying. For all of prior history, reproducing a text at scale required either enormous labour or the permission of whoever owned it; the press handed that capacity to anyone who could afford a shop and some type. When copying is scarce and controlled, the controllers rule; when it becomes cheap and general, power leaks out to the edges — and the centre fights to claw it back.
What it actually changed
So what did the printing press impact actually amount to, once you strip away both the triumphalism and the fear? Several things at once — and not all of them comfortable.
It standardised languages. When printers chose a dialect to print in — the London of Chancery English, the Saxon German Luther used — they helped freeze a moving, regional, spoken thing into a fixed written standard. Spelling settled; grammar hardened. A shared national language is partly a by-product of what was economical to print. That was unifying and, for the dialects that lost, quietly erasing.
It accelerated science. A printed diagram or table could be reproduced without the copying errors that had corrupted hand-made manuscripts for centuries, so a scholar in one city could build on the exact figures read by one in another. Knowledge became cumulative in a way that scarce, drifting manuscripts had never allowed. The scientific revolution had many causes, but reliable, identical, widely shared texts were among its conditions.
It spread news — and propaganda. The same cheap pamphlet that could carry a genuine discovery could carry a lie, a libel, or a manufactured panic just as efficiently. Print had no conscience; it amplified whatever was fed into it, and plenty of that was inflammatory, sectarian, or simply false. The wars of religion that convulsed Europe were fought partly in print, each side flooding the market with its own version of events. Anyone who imagines cheaper information automatically means a better-informed public should study the seventeenth century closely.
A machine that lets more people produce and reach knowledge does not sort the true from the false on its way out the door. It carries both, faster.
It redistributed who could speak. The press did not merely make existing books cheaper; it lowered the cost of becoming a producer of text at all. A pamphleteer with a grievance, a heretic with a doctrine, a merchant with a schedule of prices — all could now reach an audience the old order had kept small. That is why it felt dangerous: it changed who got to be an author, and authorship is a form of power.
How power responded
Here is the tell. If the press had truly been the unambiguous gift of legend, no one would have needed to fight it. Yet the historical record is full of authorities working, hard and deliberately, to put the genie back — or at least to fit it with a leash.
They responded with licensing. If you could not stop the press, you could try to own the on-switch. States and churches set up systems where nothing could be printed without prior approval, granting monopolies to trusted printers and outlawing the rest. In England, printing was funnelled through a licensed company and controlled through royal privilege. Make the bottleneck legal rather than physical.
They responded with censorship and the banned list. The Catholic Church compiled its Index Librorum Prohibitorum, an official register of books the faithful were forbidden to read, maintained and expanded for centuries; secular authorities kept their own prohibitions. The message was consistent across every regime that tried it: the freedom to copy must be answered by a power to forbid it.
They responded, too, with surveillance and punishment — searching shops, seizing type, prosecuting printers, sometimes brutally. The censor is the clearest evidence we have that the press was, first and foremost, a redistribution of power: you do not censor a tool that leaves power where it was.
The pattern underneath
Step back far enough and the printing press stops looking like a one-off miracle and starts looking like an instance of something recurring — a capture pattern: the same move, a new machine, every time. A technology arrives that changes who can produce and access some valuable thing; the people who held a monopoly over it resist, sometimes by smashing the machine, more often by capturing it — licensing, taxing, regulating, buying, wrapping it in law until the disruptive edge is filed off and the tool serves the old power after all. Meanwhile the scribes, whose livelihoods depended on the old scarcity, mostly just pay, and are mostly forgotten.
The same shape appears elsewhere once you know to look for it. When common land across England was fenced off and privatised during the enclosure of the commons, a shared resource was captured by those with the power to claim it, and the people who depended on it were dispossessed and told it was improvement. Trace the first writing back to its origins and you find it began not as poetry but as accountancy — a receipt for debt. Writing entered the world as an instrument of control before it was ever one of liberation. The broader question of how technology gets captured — how a tool that promises to free people so often ends up concentrating power instead — is really the same question the printing press poses, asked across many machines and many centuries.
The lesson is not that technology is bad, or that the press was secretly a curse — the Reformation, the scientific revolution and mass literacy were real gains I would not trade back. The lesson is subtler: a technology that changes who can produce and access knowledge always redistributes power, and whoever is losing a monopoly will always resist. Disruption is never neutral; there is always someone who takes, someone who pays, and someone who fights back.

Which brings us, unavoidably, to the present. We are living through the arrival of another machine that changes who can produce and access knowledge — this time not by copying words cheaply but by generating them, and images, and code, and analysis, on demand. The debates will feel familiar. Watch for the scribes: the people whose skilled work is being made abundant and therefore cheap, told they are simply obsolete and should retrain, as if a lifetime of craft could be reissued like a licence. Watch for the monopoly on interpretation: the gatekeepers who decided what counted as expertise, now facing a tool that answers the layperson directly. Watch, above all, for the response of power — the licensing regimes, the calls to control the on-switch, the arguments over who may run these systems. Some of that will be wise and necessary; propaganda, remember, printed just as easily as truth. But some of it will be exactly what it was in Mainz and London and Rome: an old monopoly, correctly frightened, moving to capture a machine before it redistributes what they hold.
The printing press did not tell us whether its disruption would end well. That was decided by the fights that followed — over who controlled it, who was shielded from its costs, and who got to speak through it. The same is true of the machine on the table now: the technology does not settle the question of justice. We do. And the first step, as it was six centuries ago, is to refuse the comfortable story that any of it is neutral — and to ask, clearly and early, who it threatens first.
